Our current flock consists of a variety of approximately 30 cold-hardy hens. These include Wellsummers, Buff Orpingtons, Amerucanas, Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, Leghorns, Black French Copper Marans and Australorps. Collectively, they lay a rainbow of medium to large eggs
We currently have one Buff Orpington rooster, Barnaby. We find that keeping a rooster around helps keep order and peace among a such a large flock of hens. Not only do they help keep watch, and sound the alarm, but also keep the hens well-fed and on task of laying eggs.
The flock resides in a predator-proof coop building with an attached L-Shaped Run with seasonal access to an enormous fenced garden. We are unable to safely free-range at this time due to predator load.
Hens (and Roosters) are fed Nutrena Naturewise Layer 16 Pellet, along with vegetable scraps and garden mulch.
We love using Best Nest Box's rollaway nesting boxes, the communal design and rollaway slant ensures cleaner eggs, less breakage and happier hens.
We have found over the years (10+) the 'deep litter' method to be the most effective and efficient way to deal with chicken waste. Seasonal deep cleans and routinely adding new bedding ensures a clean coop and used litter gets tilled back into the garden.
